Rubio Says Russia-Ukraine Peace Prospects Dim

(MENAFN) US Secretary of State Marco Rubio painted a bleak picture Wednesday of efforts to end the Russia-Ukraine war, warning that neither side has shown willingness to make the concessions a negotiated settlement demands.

"As of right now, the prospects don't look great, and that either side is prepared to make the concessions necessary in order to reach an agreement," Rubio told the House Foreign Affairs Committee.

Rubio reserved particular frustration for Russia, identifying Moscow as the more intransigent party in stalled peace efforts. He insisted the conflict holds "no military solution" and can only be resolved through diplomacy — while candidly admitting that Washington falls short of being an "impartial mediator," given its ongoing weapons transfers to Kyiv.

Despite mounting pressures elsewhere, Rubio assured lawmakers that US backing for Ukraine remains "unimpeded" by the parallel crisis unfolding in the Middle East.

"I don't have any news for you on that front today, but ... we're ready to step in and play whatever positive role we can to bring that devastating and escalating war to an end," said Rubio.

Diplomatic Engagement With Moscow
Rubio framed continued engagement with Russia as a non-negotiable pillar of what he called "mature diplomacy," insisting that political disagreements cannot justify cutting off dialogue entirely. "At a minimum, we have to have relations and conversations with Russians," he said, pointing to Russia's position as holder of the world's second-largest nuclear arsenal as reason enough to keep channels open.

He was careful to separate the war itself from the wider US-Russia relationship, suggesting bilateral ties would likely turn "friendlier and easier to pursue" in a post-war environment.

Rubio also mounted a defense of President Donald Trump's diplomatic instincts, highlighting the president's openness to direct engagement with any world leader — and his rejection of the long-held notion that sitting down for talks amounts to a concession.
